Sundstrom’s win earned him a trophy, NASA souvenirs—and bragging rights for life. So what’s at the heart of the ability to design an aircraft with tiny plastic bricks that in theory could also actually function in the skies? One might say it’s sheer genius, but it’s actually called spatial reasoning. Writer Annie Murphy Paul describes it as â€Å"the ability to  mentally manipulate shapes  and otherwise understand how the three-dimensional world works.† It’s a critical skill for a wide range of occupations—from mathematics and engineering, to design and sculpture. But it’s rarely given the attention many educators and experts believe it deserves—at least not in the traditional classroom environment. Educators, experts, scientists, etc., have all sorts of ideas on why spatial reasoning skills haven’t received the same curricular attention as math and verbal skills, which we’ll get into in a minute. But one of the more intriguing theories, proposed by Kirk Goldsberry in his article â€Å"The Importance of Spatial Thinking Now,† posits that when Harvard University shuttered its Geography Department in the 1940s, many (but not all) universities elected to dissolve their programs as well. The effect, he believes, has been profound. â€Å"We are paying for a prolonged lack of spatial thinking [†¦] There are too few classes that enable learners to improve their spatial reasoning abilities, with maps and visualizations being of course the most central artifacts to such improvements. [†¦] Not enough people know how to make maps or handle spatial data sets.† Why is this so important now? Because of this: we don’t rely on mere words alone to communicate and disseminate data anymore (we probably never really did), and the phenomena of big data has made its counterpart, data visualization, increasingly critical in helping to â€Å"visually decode† an overwhelming amount of information. Charts, infographics, 3-D graphics—even animation shorts—are harnessed more than ever to translate large, chunky, convoluted data into easily digestible, bite-sized bits. You see, our brains really like pictures—and we learn a lot faster when they’re paired with data. Typically,  we are likely to remember only about 10%  of information three days after we’ve first absorbed it. But that retention rate skyrockets to 65% when you throw a picture (or more) in the mix. This concept is—no surprise—known as the picture superiority effect. Check out a few of former New York Times’ reporter  Megan Jaegerman’s infographics, and see if you don’t walk away with new, quickly ingested knowledge on a topic you didn’t know much about before. But for every great design, there are far more  bad ones. So how come schools aren’t stepping up to the plate to help students hone their spatial reasoning skills so they have the ability to not only visualize, but also communicate, data more effectively? Forbes writer Alex Knapp, opines in his article â€Å"Why Schools Don’t Value Spatial Reasoning,† that spatial reasoning is harder to test and teach than the traditional triumvirate of â€Å"reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic†. Just consider the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), he says, and what it measures: quantitative and verbal skills. There is no spatial reasoning section. (There is a test, the Differential Aptitude Test, which can measure those skills.) But here’s the thing: it’s possible—just like you might be better at math than reading comprehension—you also might be exceptionally good at spatial reasoning and never know it because you’ve never been tested for it. This quote by Pat Robertson works as a great illustration for how our nation reacted to the suicide attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda on United States soil. The initial reaction by political pundits and politicians alike was that the only cause of these attacks was due to a radical Islamic view on the world. However, in Robert A. Pape and James K. Feldman’s book Cutting the Fuse they try to analyze data on suicide bombing and try to determine what is the root cause of these violent acts. Their conclusions are the exact opposite of the rhetoric that was presented to the American public. Look no further than your nearest road kill if you want to collect specimens in the family Silphidae. Carrion beetles inhabit the remains of dead vertebrates, munching on maggots and consuming the corpse. As gross as that sounds, its an important job. Carrion beetles also go by the common names burying beetles and sexton beetles. What Do Carrion Beetles Look Like? Unless you’re in the habit of examining carcasses, you may never come across a carrion beetle. Some species will fly to porch lights on summer evenings, so you may get lucky and find one on your front door. While we might find the carrion beetle’s diet rather distasteful, these scavengers provide a vital ecological service - disposing of carcasses. Most of the carrion beetles we encounter fall into one of two genera: Silpha or Nicrophorus. Silpha beetles are medium to large, oval in shape, and usually flattened. They’re typically black, sometimes with a yellow pronotum. Nicrophorus beetles (sometimes spelled Necrophorus) are commonly called burying beetles, thanks to their remarkable ability to move and bury carcasses. Their bodies are elongate, with shortened elytra. Many burying beetles are red and black in color. Though carrion beetles as a family range in size from just a few millimeters to as long as 35 mm, most species we commonly encounter top 10 mm in length. Silphids have clubbed antennae, and tarsi (feet) with 5 joints. Carrion beetle larvae have elongated bodies that taper at the hind end. Carrion Beetles Classifications Kingdom - AnimaliaPhylum - ArthropodaClass - InsectaOrder - ColeoopteraFamily - Silphidae Carrion Beetle Diet As adults, most carrion beetles feed on maggots, as well as on the decomposing carcass they inhabit. The adults’ voracious appetite for maggots certainly helps eliminate competition for their offspring. The carrion beetle larvae feed on the carcass, which would quickly be devoured by maggots without the intervention of the adult Silphids. A few carrion beetle species feed on plants, or even more rarely, prey on snails or caterpillars. The Carrion Beetle Life Cycle Like all beetles, Silphids undergo complete metamorphosis, with four stages of the life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult carrion beetles lay eggs on or near a decomposing carcass. The young larvae emerge in about a week and will feed on the carcass for up to a month before pupating. Interesting Behaviors of Carrion Beetles Burying beetles (genus Nicrophorus) practice remarkable feats of insect strength in an effort to beat the competition to the carcass. When a pair of burying beetles comes across a carcass, they will immediately go to work burying the body. A couple Nicrophorus beetles can completely inter a carcass as large as a rat in a matter of hours. To do so, the beetles plow the earth beneath the carcass, using their heads like bulldozer blades to push loose soil out from under the body. As more and more soil is excavated from beneath it, the carcass begins to settle into the ground. Eventually, the burying beetles push the loose soil back over the body, effectively hiding it from competitors like blow flies. If the soil beneath the carcass proves to difficult to dig, the beetles may work together to lift and carry the body to another location nearby. The bright bands of red or orange on the wings of many carrion beetles warn potential predators that they won’t make a very delicious meal, so don’t bother tasting them. There’s something to be said for the old adage â€Å"you are what you eat.† Carrion beetles, after all, feed on rotting flesh, and all the bacteria that goes along with it. Silphids apparently taste and smell like death. Where Do Carrion Beetles Live? The family Silphidae is a fairly small beetle group, with just 175 species known worldwide. In a conversation between Tadek and his fellow mates he comments â€Å"They can’t run out of people, or we’ll starve to death in this blasted camp. All of us live on what they brin g† (Borowski 31). The prisoners live and survive on the numerous victims that are brought in for execution on a daily basis. In addition, the prisoners feel that the least the victims deserve is a last hope until they face their own deaths, it is said to be â€Å"the only permissible form of charity† (37). This was a tactic in the Nazis overall strategy to achieve their genocidal goals. The author uses narration to explain to the reader that since the victims did not meet the standards of the Nazi community, the â€Å"Final solution† was to get rid of them.
